The Peeled Banana

A banana spoke to my heart today. No, I’m not crazy. It was a powerful visual moment, that made me reflect. As I was preparing for breakfast this morning, I grabbed a banana to start with. I peeled back one layer of banana skin, and then decided to prepare some oatmeal. I placed the slightly peeled banana in my plate, and proceeded to prepare my oatmeal. When I returned to my plate, the portion of the skin I had peeled away from the banana, was significantly darker in color. This darkening of the skin happened in such a brief amount of time. It could not have been more than 5 minutes. Looking at the significant difference in color, clearly showed me what happens when the banana skin is separated from the core of the banana. The peeling is lacking in what keeps it sustained. This is what happens to us as humans, when we are not staying connected to God. When we neglect our faith, we struggle. Our nutrient, our core, our source of life, is in direct correlation with Jesus. God is our life line. Prayer is our connection. Faith and trust in God is what carries us through each day. When we forget to pray, or think we can handle life on our own…we become depleted. We darken…like the banana peel. I encourage you to press in to your faith. Commit to praying and reading scripture each day. It only takes 5 minutes to maintain your spiritual health. Your core existence depends on the nutrients of God.

The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble. My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words.  Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. PROVERBS 4:18-23

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. PHILIPPIANS 3:13-14

God is with us.
